Building Code Requirements for Floor Identification Signs
Per Section 1022.8.1 Sub 6, when these signs are installed in interior exit enclosures that are subject to the Section 1024 requirements, they shall be made of the same photoluminescent material. This includes Stairway Identification Signs:
- Minimum 12 inches x 18 inches in size
- The letters that designate the staircase (e.g., STAIR 3) in 1.5 inches height
- The floor level in a minimum of 5 inches (e.g., B for basement, PH for penthouse, 1)
- All other letters and numbers in minimum 1-inch letter height
- The characters and their background shall be non-glare and provide sufficient light on dark contrast
Many jurisdictions require the floor level in raised and Braille to be legible for the Visually Impaired. Certain jurisdictions require the entire Floor ID Sign text in raised and Braille.
